On 11 September 1940 a Heinkel He 111 H-3 of 3./KG 1 was damaged by anti-aircraft fire after attacking the West India docks in London; then, turning for home, it was attacked by fighters as it fled for the coast and eventually force landed in a field near Hildenborough, Kent.  When the recovery crew arrived, the wings were removed and it was placed onto a  Queen Mary trailer.  After making its way through the village of Hildenborough and arriving at the Half Moon public house carpark they then realized that the Heinkel was too large to get through the narrow roads.  It stayed there for a few days until it could be dismantled; in the meantime it became a focal point for collecting for the Spitfire Fund, as shown in this scene.

This print is signed by Wing Commander Paul Farnes DFM.  He joined the RAF Volunteer Reserve in April 1938.  After initial training he converted to Hurricanes.  On the 14th September 1939 he joined 501 Squadron.  The Squadron flew to France on 10 May 1940 where he achieved several victories.  Withdrawn from France the Squadron regrouped and moved to Gravesend on 26 July.  During the next three months he fought with distinction in the Battle of Britain, scoring more victories.  He was awarded the DFM on 22 October 1940.  His final tally was 8 victories with many damaged.
