336th Fighter Interceptor Squadron crew chief A/2C Walter ‘Wally’ Yocum Jr. poses with his F-86F Sabre at Kimpo Air Base, Korea shortly after the end of the war.

The tradition in most fighter squadrons dating back to World War II was that the right side of the nose was the crew chief’s to name, and the left side belonged to the assigned pilot. Wally chose ‘Sweet Rose’ after his future wife of almost 60 years. The left side of the Sabre carried the name ‘Dreaded Gomboo.’ Her pilot was 2Lt. Kenneth C. Ewing.
