Welcome! My goal is to seamlessly combine the disciplines of historian and artist to produce what I like to call 'single-frame movies' depicting past actions that may have escaped the photographer's lens, or were generally impossible to record on film.
My major compositions, and the aircraft perspectives themselves, are not based on historical images or modern photography of the subjects - though I wish I could hire planes to fly around at my direction! I decided long ago that to succeed in this game at a professional level I had to be able to say "yes" to any moment in history I might be called upon to depict, with the objects as viewed from any angle or distance from the viewer's eye, and with the sun in any relative position. To that end, I have spent years studying perspective projection theory and techniques as taught to engineering and drafting students way back when, along with the timeless properties of light, shadow, color, and reflectivity apropos to classical representational painting. The result, if done properly, appears to be copied from a photograph when in reality the scenes were built from scratch.
The workflow is documented for many of my projects on my Facebook page (see link below). That said, nothing to me is more relaxing than copying an old wartime photograph in pencil as an academic exercise - and to add my own 'take' to the image.

Cover painting for The Silver Waterfall, by Kevin Miller

Warish, a hard rock band cofounded and fronted by Riley Hawk, son of skateboard legend Tony Hawk, chose my Self Portrait Over Georgia as the cover art for their debut full length album, Down in Flames. Image courtesy RidingEasy Records.
